(Columbus)
– Kamal Boulos, owner of The Refectory Restaurant & Bistro, was awarded the
2009 Small Business Leader of the Year with annual revenue exceeding $1 million
recently by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
“I
am humbled by this award – especially given the caliber of the other nominees. This honor is a tribute to all who have
shared this journey with me and supported me along the way, from my wonderful
family, my Advisory Board, the staff and to the great patrons at the Refectory.
Words do not adequately convey my appreciation for the support, friendship and
encouragement,” Boulos said.
Boulos was one of five finalists for the prestigious award
from over 50 nominees. Small business leaders are nominated and finalists are
selected by a panel of small business and Columbus Chamber of Commerce
representatives.
“Small businesses are vital to economic growth and
development, and these business leaders have made considerable contributions to
the community,” said Michael Gordon, senior vice president, business services,
Columbus Chamber. “We’re proud to recognize these local businesses for their
continued success and involvement in the Columbus region.”
Boulos
has been with the Refectory for 32 of its 33 years in business. Under his
leadership, the Refectory has received
the prestigious Four Diamond Award from AAA for 14 years in a row; and for 11
of those years; The Refectory was the only restaurant in Columbus to receive
this distinction. Additionally, The Refectory is the most award-winning
restaurant in Columbus and has received Zagat, DiRoNa and Wine Spectator
Awards, along with Five Stars from both Columbus
Monthly and Columbus Dispatch.
Kamal has kept pace with his
clients changing needs with a more casual Bistro menu for those looking to
experience the lighter side of The Refectory at lighter prices. He is also passionate about community involvement
and taking the Refectory experience outside the Refectory walls. In the past
several years, the Refectory has donated its famed food to dozens of charitable
organizations and events.
From its stellar cuisine and
award-winning wine cellar featuring more than 700 selections, to its serene
setting and gracious yet unpretentious service, The Refectory Restaurant &
Bistro is consistently lauded both locally and regionally. Chef Richard Blondin,
a native of Lyon, France, prepares his fare with passion and the finest,
freshest ingredients available – working with local purveyors to procure
farm-raised ostrich and elk, as well as fresh berries and tomatoes from
orchards in Ohio. Located at 1092 Bethel Road, The Refectory is open Monday
